Speech Bubbles in Manga Studio by aethre Speech Bubbles in Manga Studio by aethre
Apparently I like making tutorials now?

And, yes, Manga Studio really does hate me. The bugger program has waaaay too many good features to give up on it, though. Best inking program I've ever used.

(Eight <3)

Also, thanks muchly to *Zaron for being the one who told me how to make these bubbles in the first place. Stupid ass google (and dA) brings up nothing good for speech bubble creation in Manga Studio.

And here's a bunch of keywords so that google can find this page (since dA refuses to admit it exists): word balloon, word bubble, dialogue balloon. All are synonymous and all that jazz.

Wow this is great! I had wondered how I could make the bubbles overlap or the tail connect two bubbles. I had just been making them oversized and editing them in other programs later.

Does anyone know how to make speech bubbles that cut off by the panel borders (like using the panels as clipping masks)? Or do you have to do that yourself? And I noticed in my artwork that the text isn't so crisp - it must not be vector text, and even cuts of sometimes.

The bubbles will be cut automatically if the text folder with the bubble is within the panel folder it belongs to. When you click the panel folder, you can resize the panel properly. ^^
And the text comes out crisp only if you resize it by typing the size into the little window belonging to it (the one with "generate balloon" in it and stuff). If you scale the text using the mouse instead, it might become blurry, at least that's what happened when I used it.

If you haven't figured it out yet, make the panels the proper way (eg, panel ruler layer, panel cutting tool, rasterise layer) and it'll mask properly. You might have to put the panel layer on top. Not 100% sure since I haven't used MS in a few months.

Just wanted to add to the chorus of "thank yous" here. I'm slowly moving from Photoshop to MS4EX for my comics and I decided to start with the lettering, but I couldn't figure out how to merge balloons. After reading through the documentation and looking at way too many websites I had just about given up when I found your tutorial. I nearly applauded when I saw steps 10-13, on joining balloons. I haven't seen that information anywhere else.

This is the best tutorial on lettering in MS that exists on the web. You have no idea how much you've helped me. Thanks again.

Thanks, I needed this. :) It's so simple, but for the life of me, I just couldn't figure out how to put the tail on the bubble! I can't believe I missed that...Well now I know, and you've saved me a lot of trouble! Faved for future reference!

Uhmm, at Step 12, what do you mean by "Just close the folder"? Sorry if I'm asking a noob question, since I'm newbie to manga studio.

You know the little triangle left of the folder icon? If it is pointing down, the folder is open. If it is pointing right, the folder is closed.

Yes, actually, I do! You just have to make sure the color inside dialogue balloon option is checked and set to white (or whatever colour you want it to be). And here's a screenshot showing that.

I actually haven't been able to figure that one out, sorry. I dunno why it isn't there - I've seen the bubble trail used a few times in manga so wtf MS, wtf? Best advice I've got is to make the bubble trail manually with a circle creating tool thing, sorry.

Since I don't letter my comic in Manga Studio I had no idea that the program could fix the overlap of two word bubbles like that. I've been doing it manually in photoshop this entire time...

...

Now I feel silly.

Oh man, didn't know that one at first either. I actually discovered that by accident (as I had originally used white ink on a layer on top of the bubbles to get rid of the overlap) when I got annoyed with having to see the sixty million text layers. It was like an epiphany of wondrousness!
