Speech Bubbles in Manga Studio by aethre Speech Bubbles in Manga Studio by aethre
Apparently I like making tutorials now?

And, yes, Manga Studio really does hate me. The bugger program has waaaay too many good features to give up on it, though. Best inking program I've ever used.

(Eight <3)

Also, thanks muchly to *Zaron for being the one who told me how to make these bubbles in the first place. Stupid ass google (and dA) brings up nothing good for speech bubble creation in Manga Studio.

And here's a bunch of keywords so that google can find this page (since dA refuses to admit it exists): word balloon, word bubble, dialogue balloon. All are synonymous and all that jazz.

Nice and useful, sometimes Manga Studio could be complicated, thanks for share...

Wow this is great! I had wondered how I could make the bubbles overlap or the tail connect two bubbles. I had just been making them oversized and editing them in other programs later.

Does anyone know how to make speech bubbles that cut off by the panel borders (like using the panels as clipping masks)? Or do you have to do that yourself? And I noticed in my artwork that the text isn't so crisp - it must not be vector text, and even cuts of sometimes.

The bubbles will be cut automatically if the text folder with the bubble is within the panel folder it belongs to. When you click the panel folder, you can resize the panel properly. ^^
And the text comes out crisp only if you resize it by typing the size into the little window belonging to it (the one with "generate balloon" in it and stuff). If you scale the text using the mouse instead, it might become blurry, at least that's what happened when I used it.

If you haven't figured it out yet, make the panels the proper way (eg, panel ruler layer, panel cutting tool, rasterise layer) and it'll mask properly. You might have to put the panel layer on top. Not 100% sure since I haven't used MS in a few months.

This tutorial is all kinds of perfect, thank you!
Now I can say goodbye to shitty-ish pixeltastic speech bubbles on GIMP~<3
